This method is based on the “spacing effect,” a psychological phenomenon where our brains learn more effectively when we spread out our learning over time. Neuroscience supports this technique, showing that each time we revisit material, our neural connections strengthen, improving memory retention.

Dual coding is a method based on the idea of linking verbal information with visual aids. This approach, supported by cognitive psychology, suggests that we can remember information better when we use both verbal and visual memory systems. Creating mind maps, diagrams, or even doodles related to the material can help reinforce memory.

Retrieval practice, also known as the “testing effect,” involves recalling information from memory, which strengthens and enhances that memory. It involves associating the elements you want to remember with specific physical locations. By visualizing a familiar place (like your home), and placing the items to be remembered within that space, you can create a mental journey that significantly enhances recall.

Method 6: Sleep on It

Recent neuroscience research highlights the importance of sleep for memory consolidation. During sleep, our brains replay the information we learned when we were awake, strengthening our memory traces. Therefore, a good night’s sleep after learning can significantly improve memory recall.
